(

that the crack in the first and third spans became clear and

showed that the voussoirs had parted for quite half inch

throughout. This was not visible from the bottom and it may

be cracks that will show on Bridge No. 14. The peculiar position

of the cracks in these arch bridges clearly point to the fact

that it is not so much a matter of foundation as of faulty

material and design.

The bridge is now being stripped and the

lime concrete appears to be in no better condition then at

Bridge No. 12. As the bridge is not a high one and the rest of

the work appears to be sound, I only propose to insert props

between the layers of cement concrete and to remove the lime

concrete putting in cement concrete in its place. This will be

done by sections. The spandrils must be carried up higher and

in this and other bridges where the distance between the Crown

and Formation is insufficient a cushion of clean sharp sand

will be put in between the sleeper and the extrados.

20.

Bridge No. 14. It requires a drop wall on the down side

and will be the better for an invert end I am accordingly

arranging for this to be done.

21.

avz

Bridge No. 17. Although the bridge is founded on

soft rock there appears to have been a scour through the

northern span. This will require a drop wall and floor.

22.

Bridge No. 18 is a concrete structure and is founded

on course water lorged sand. Cracks developed half way through

the abutments, and at the centre of the Crown. Although I could

get a bar down ahout eight feet the bar on being withdrawn show-

-ed clean so that there does not appear to be any Kaolin mixed

with the sand. This bridre which is subject to the variations

of the tide has been built without a drop wall to prevent

scour,

and retain the sand foundations. I have had a drop wall

put in and aå invert turned between the arches. It is hard to

understand why arched bridges were selected in such uncertain

founds and why if selected inverts were not used. The bridge

in this case should have been located at the north end of the

cutting
